An Lushan
(703-57) Chinese general of Turkish origin who led a rebellion against the Tang dynasty in 755. In 756 he captured the capital Chang'an and declared himself the first emperor of the Great Yen dynasty. He was murdered in 757, but the rebellion continued until 763. The authority of the Tang never fully recovered.
