A glossary of historical terms
Ligurians
Indigenous group of southern France and northeast Italy that became Celticized from the 3rd century BC through amicable relations with neighboring Gauls. Greek settlements developed on the Mediterranean coast from about 600 BC, and the area was conquered by the Romans between 238 and 117 BC. No archeological culture can be equated with the Ligurians.
