Lepanto, Battle of
Naval battle fought 7 October 1571 when the fleet of the Holy League, commanded by Don John of Austria, defeated the Ottoman fleet off the coast of Greece, capturing 117 galleys. Though it boosted the morale of Christian Europe, the battle was only a minor setback to Turkish power in the Mediterranean.
