A glossary of historical terms
Laurion mines
Silver mines in southern Attica, among the most productive in the Greek world, which made a vital contribution to Athens’ prosperity. The Athenian navy, which defeated the Persians, was built largely from their proceeds. The mines were owned by the state, leased to citizens and mined by slaves, whose working conditions were appalling and life expectancy short.
