A glossary of historical terms
Lagash
Sumerian city that became a major city-state in the Early Dynastic period and briefly dominated south Mesopotamia after King Eannatum conquered the city of Kish (c.2400 BC). Control of Lagash later fell to Umma and to Sargon of Agade, but its power revived in the 22nd century BC when it was rebuilt by Gudea, a vassal king of Gutian overlords. The city declined after its capture by Larsa in about 2100 BC.
