Kofun period

The name given to the early Yamato period of Japanese history (AD 300-550), referring to its distinctive 'old tombs' (kofun) and especially the huge keyhole tombs. It was during this period that the first states and confederations emerged in Japan, and Shinto shrines, such as those at Ise, were constructed.
