Khalkin Gol, Battle of

(August 1939) Clash on the Mongolian frontier between Soviet troops and Japanese forces advancing from Manchuria. Soviet victory led to the Japanese-Soviet neutrality pact of 1941 and forced Japan to expand through southeast Asia instead.
