A glossary of historical terms
Kalinga
Ancient kingdom of eastern India, now in northern Andhra Pradesh state. It was conquered by Magadha in about 340 BC, but seceded before Ashoka's reconquest in 261 BC. After the collapse of the Mauyran empire Kalinga regained independence, and flourishing trade with southeast Asia made it prosperous. It was conquered again by the Guptas and finally disappeared in 1324 at the hands of the Delhi sultanate.
