Ismail Pasha

(1830-95) Khedive of Egypt and grandson of Mehmet Ali. Virtually autonomous by 1872, he expanded Egypt southward. To deal with financial problems, he sold shares in the Suez Canal to Britain in 1875. The Ottoman sultan deposed him in 1879 and his son, Prince Tewfik, subsequently became Khedive.
