A glossary of historical terms
Iranian languages
Group of languages in the Indo-European family. It includes Avestan and Old Persian (the languages of ancient Iran), as well as those of many of the historic nomadic peoples of central Asia, such as Parthian, Soghdian and Saka (also known as Khotanese). Modern Persian has an Iranian basis, as have the languages of Afghanistan, Kurdistan and Tajikistan.
