Hudson's Bay Company

English trading company, formed 2 May 1670, to seek a northwest passage to Asia and trade in the area around Hudson Bay. It was granted Rupert's Land. Despite most of its trading posts being held by the French from 1686 to 1713, it prospered, and still exists as a commercial company.
