Grenville, George

British politician (1712-70) and prime minister (1763- 65). His taxation policies did much to alienate the American colonies, while his prosecution for seditious libel of the politician John Wilkes and mishandling of the Regency Act (1765) undermined his position. He remained bitterly opposed to any appeasement of the colonies, contributing to the American Revolution.
