City and region on the Arabian Sea coast of India. Captured for Portugal by Albuquerque in 1510, it became important as Portuguese India's seat of government, but when the Portuguese administration moved to Panaji in 1759, Goa declined to follow. It was forcibly taken back under Indian control in 1961.
