Go-Daigo

Emperor of Japan (r.1333-39) who attempted to overthrow the shogunate and restore direct imperial rule. With the support of Ashikaga Takauji, Go-Daigo overthrew the Kamakura shogunate in 1333. However, his failure to reward Takauji led Takauji to proclaim himself shogun in 1335. In 1336 Takauji captured the imperial capital at Kyoto and appointed a puppet emperor, founding the Ashikaga shogunate. Go-Daigo fled to the Yoshino mountains and held out until his death.
