Gaul

The area equivalent to modern France. Occupied by Celts and related tribes, the south was influenced by Greek colonization. Gaul gradually came under Roman control. The Mediterranean south formed Provincia (Provence) in 121 BC, and in 58-50 BC Julius Caesar conquered the rest. Augustus created four provinces: Narbonensis, Lugdunensis, Aquitania and Belgica. German peoples invaded in the 5th century AD.
