Gama, Vasco da

Portuguese navigator (c.1469-1524), the first to sail from Europe to India around southern Africa (1497- 99). His landfall at Calicut began an era of European expansion in the Indian Ocean and initiated the Portuguese domination of the spice trade. He made a second voyage to India (1502), and returned again in 1524 as viceroy, shortly before his death.
