Funj

Kingdom in what is today Sudan. The capital, Sennar, was founded in 1504-05. During the 16th century it converted to Islam, and fought wars of expansion against Ethiopia. Internal conflicts weakened the kingdom, and it was taken over by Egypt in 1821.
