Ferdinand I

Holy Roman emperor (r.1558-64). Younger brother of Charles V, he acted as his deputy in Germany for over 30 years, and persuaded Charles to compromise with Protestantism in the Peace of Augsburg. His election to the imperial crown divided Charles's empire in half.
