Eritrea

Independent state on the shores of the Red Sea north of Ethiopia. Part of the ancient Ethiopian empire, it was occupied by Italy and became a colony in 1890. Occupied by British and imperial troops in 1941, it became a province of Ethiopia in 1962 and independent in 1993.
