A glossary of historical terms
Elizabethan era
Period of English history associated with the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). The period was, on the whole, marked by peace and prosperity. English literature and theatre flourished with authors such as William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Edmund Spenser (1552-99) and Christopher Marlowe (1564-93) and England rose as a great naval power. Parliamentary politics also became increasingly more important during this period.
