East Indies

Southeast Asian archipelago at the western edge of the Indian Ocean. Europeans, beginning with the Portuguese in 1511, sought to establish control over its spice production. From the 17th century the Dutch ejected European rivals and gradually established an empire over most of it: the Dutch East Indies, which became independent as Indonesia in 1949.
