Asian territory, now part of China. An Oirat Mongol khanate established there in the 1630s strongly resisted Manchu expansion. Internal division led to its extremely bloody conquest by the Manchu after three invasions (1755-58). They kept it under military control until the fall of the Qing dynasty.
