Dost Muhammed

(1783-1863) Ruler of Afghanistan (r.1826-38 and 1843-63). He captured Kabul in 1826, occupied most of the country and established friendly relations with Russia. This aroused British anxieties and led to the First Afghan War and his capture. Restored, he was regarded as a British ally after 1855.
