Diem, Ngo Dinh

(1901-63) Vietnamese politician who became the first prime minister of South Vietnam in June 1954. Bigoted and unpopular, he was opposed by the Viet Cong and requested aid from the USA. 16,000 American advisers arrived in 1956, but Diem was assassinated.
