De Beers

Diamond mining company formed by Cecil Rhodes in 1880, named after a Boer farmer on whose land diamonds were found. By amalgamating several companies operating in the Kimberley area of Cape Province, South Africa, Rhodes created De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1887 and monopolized southern Africa's diamond trade. De Beers is still in business.
