Détente

A lull in the Cold War during the 1970s. Pioneered by American diplomat Henry Kissinger and presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, detente was characterized by US-Soviet and US-Chinese summits, the SALT talks and the Helsinki Agreements. It ended with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
