A glossary of historical terms

Congo, Republic of

Formerly the Belgian Congo (the Congo Free State), which became independent as the Republic of Congo in 1960. In 1971 the name was changed to Zaire. President Sese Seko Mobutu was overthrown by political opponents in 1997 and the name was changed back to Republic of Congo.
