Decisive naval battle of the American Revolution, fought 5 September 1781 off the coast of Virginia. The French fleet commanded by Grasse forced Admiral Thomas Graves's British fleet to retire to New York after six of his ships were badly damaged, leaving Cornwallis trapped at Yorktown.
