Secret police set up by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in December 1917 under Felix Dzerzhinski. Responsible for the 'Red Terror' that followed the assassination attempt on Lenin in August 1917, in 1922 it became the OGPU (later the NKVD, then the KGB).
