Chamberlain, Neville

(1869-1940) British statesman. Conservative member of Parliament from 1918, chancellor of the exchequer (1931-37), and prime minister from 1937 to 1940, he was the main architect of appeasement. Heavily criticized after the Munich agreement, he resigned on 10 May 1940, after the German occupation of Denmark and Norway, in favor of Winston Churchill.
