A glossary of historical terms
Cathars
Heretics active from the 12th to the 14th centuries in southern France and Lombardy. Their base was the city of Albi, giving its name to the Albigensian Crusade (1209-29), after which the Inquisition was established. Adherents followed the dualist teaching, derived from the Bogomils, that all matter is evil.
