Bulgar khanate

Khanate on the Danube, founded in about 679 by a group of Bulgars, a Turkic people from central Asia who converted to Orthodox Christianity in 864 and gradually became more Slavic. The khanate was conquered by the Byzantine emperor Basil II in 1018.
