British Honduras

Modern Belize, Central America. Populated by Mayan Indians before English settlers arrived in 1638, it became a colony in 1862, governed from Jamaica, until a separate colony was established in 1871. Belize became self-governing in 1964 with independence in 1981. It has frontier disputes with Guatemala.
