Botany Bay

Bay south of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, where Captain James Cook landed in 1770. The British prime minister William Pitt intended New South Wales as a penal settlement and authorized Captain Arthur Philip (1738-1814) to found one at Botany Bay. The first fleet arrived on 18 January 1788, but the site was abandoned and the convicts sent to Sydney.
