Benin

West African rainforest kingdom founded in about 1250, now part of modern Nigeria. It was at its peak from the 16th to 18th centuries as a result of its involvement in the slave trade. The kingdom was annexed by Britain in 1897. Benin was noted for the high technical and artistic standards of its cast bronze sculptures. The former French west African colony of Dahomey adopted the name in 1975.
