Belisarius

(c.AD 500-65) General of the eastern Roman empire who reconquered northern Africa and parts of Italy, including Rome, for the emperor Justinian in the 530s. When Belisarius took Ravenna in 540 the Ostrogoths offered to make him king of Italy. Although Belisarius declined, Justinian never trusted him again.
