Ayyubid dynasty

Islamic dynasty of Egypt, founded by Saladin in 1177. The Ayyubids also controlled Syria and reduced the Crusader States of the Holy Land to a coastal strip. The dynasty was overthrown in 1250 by the Mamlukes, Turkish slave-soldiers recruited by the Ayyubids.
