A glossary of historical terms
Axum
Important trading kingdom in northern Ethiopia that successfully exploited its position on the Red Sea to survive for nearly 1,000 years (1st to 10th centuries AD). Christianity arrived at the time of its most powerful king, Ezana, in the mid-4th century, opening up links with Byzantine Egypt. In the 6th century the Axumites temporarily occupied southern Yemen.
