Avars

Nomadic people from the eastern Asiatic steppes who were driven westward in the mid-6th century AD. By 600 they had established a khanate based on the Great Hungarian Plain and encompassing much of modern Ukraine and eastern Europe. They unsuccessfully besieged Constantinople in 626 in alliance with the Sasanians. They were defeated by Charlemagne in 791.
