A glossary of historical terms
Avanti
Ancient kingdom (mahajanapadas) of west-central India. In about 600 BC its capital was at Mahismati (later moved to Ujjain). It was a major regional power until it was conquered by Magadha in the late 4th century BC. The kingdom revived after the fall of the Sakas but the region gradually became known as Malwa.
