A glossary of historical terms
Austronesian
Cultural group of southeast Asia based on the Austronesian language group that originated in Taiwan before 2000 BC. It spread through the Indonesian and Malayan archipelagoes and into the Pacific islands, where Polynesian culture developed. Austronesians from Sumatra settled Madagascar in the 1st century AD. The term is also applied to the modern languages of Malaya and Indonesia.
