Austrian Netherlands

Area of northwest Europe, comprising modern Belgium and Luxembourg. Transferred from Spain to Austria under the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), Austrian rule was ended by the French revolutionary wars in 1795. Belgium became an independent state in 1830.
