Aurignacian culture
The earliest Upper Paleolithic stone tool industry in Europe (c.40,000-29,000 ya), associated with colonization by Homo sapiens. It was characterized by a diverse new range of specialized stone and bone tools, such as burins, scrapers and projectile points, and by the appearance of complex works of art, including engraved pebbles, bone and ivory carvings, clay figurines and cave paintings (by 30,000 ya).
