Aurelian

(r.AD 270-75) Roman emperor. Born in about AD 215 in the Danube region, he rose through military success and became emperor in 270 on the death of Claudius II. In his short reign he protected Rome from barbarian invasions (including the construction of the great Aurelianic wall around Rome), defeated the Vandals in Pannonia and the Carpi on the Danube, crushed revolts in Palmyra and conquered the Gallic empire with his defeat of Tetricus in 274 at Chalons. He was murdered in 275 while on a campaign against Persia.
