A glossary of historical terms
Aurangzeb
Mughal emperor (r.1658-1707). His many conquests extended the empire to its greatest limits. However, his religious intolerance alienated non-Muslims, the cost of his wars undermined the empire's finances, and his absences allowed the peasantry to be harshly exploited. His reign left the empire seriously weakened.
