A glossary of historical terms

Augustine, St

(AD 354-430) Major theologian and preacher of Christianity who was appointed bishop of Hippo in his native north Africa. Augustine is remembered for his autobiographical Confessions and City of God (which proclaimed that the heavenly kingdom was more important than any earthly city). He was dedicated to upholding the authority of the Roman Catholic church as it moved away from its roots in the Greek world.
