Augsburg, League of

An anti-French alliance of Austria, Bavaria, Saxony, the Palatinate, Sweden and Spain, formed in 1688 in anticipation of a French claim on the Spanish throne. When Louis XIV invaded the Palatinate, England and the Netherlands joined the League, which became the Grand Alliance; it fought France until 1697.
