Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad

Southwest US transcontinental railroad, founded in 1859. It began as a project to link Atchison and Kansas City with Santa Fe to exploit the winter wheat trade, and absorbed the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad to reach Los Angeles in 1887. Bankrupt by 1893, it was reorganized and became profitable again after 1895.
