Asturias

Region of northwest Spain. The foundations of its kingdom were laid by the Visigoth nobleman Pelayo (Pelagius), whose victory over the Muslims at Covadonga in 718 is traditionally regarded as the beginning the Spanish Reconquista. In 866 Asturias became part of Leon. It was made a principality in 1338.
