Assad, Hafez al
(1930- ) President of the Syrian Arab Republic since 1971, commander-in-chief of the Syrian armed forces and leader of the Ba'ath party. He took power in a bloodless coup in 1969 and consolidated his position in 1971. He sided with the United Nations coalition against Iraq in the Gulf War and is known as the most skillful politician in the Middle East.
